So, my dog treadmill arrived this week. No, not the underwater one (that will have to wait for now.) I mean the land treadmill, similar to the kind that might be residing in your home (likely buried under a pile of clothes if you are like most of us!) or the ones you see at the gym. I have to say, I’m super excited about my new dog treadmill! Oh, the things I can do, the dogs I can help! It opens up new possibilities for me, and for your dog! Did I mention it has a bowl at the front of it to hold treats?
In case you are not as excited as me, let me share some of the wonderful things I can do to help your dog with my new dog treadmill! Hills!!! I can simulate hills! Uphill – work those back legs! Downhill – great for the shoulders, elbows and carpal strengthening! I can isolate front legs or back legs. I can get your dog to walk backwards, and even do it uphill!! That’s fabulous for hamstrings! I can add a weighted vest or “ankle” weights. I can make it as easy as a stroll around the block or as challenging as running up a mountain! I can go really slowly so I can reteach a paralyzed dog how to walk again or get your dog to start using that injured leg after surgery. I can go fast and improve fitness for canine athletes as well as working dogs (think search and rescue or police dogs). I can increase endurance and cardiovascular efficiency. I can help your overweight dog lose fat tissue and live happier and longer. I can help your anxious dog with nervous energy burn some energy off in a healthy way. The list goes on and on!
And, I can do all this while its 110 degrees outside, on the few days it rains in Phoenix, or on the rare occasion its “freezing” outside (and yes, anything under 70 degrees qualifies as cold to me!) Who could ask for anything better!!
